A top knot bun is stylish hairstyle made from winding your hair in a bun on the top of your head. It’s a very versatile look and can range from sleek and sophisticated to messy chic. Begin making the look by pulling your hair into a high ponytail, then wrapping your hair around the base of the ponytail and securing it with a hair tie. You can even use a hair donut to make the bun fuller and more voluminous.

The most effective pins for securing a bun are hairpins. Hairpins have several crimps (waves) in the middle of each prong, which help the pin grip the hair. The thicker, less flexible pins provide the strongest hold. Bobby pins are best used to hold down flyaway hairs or fringes and to secure curls or plaits. To use the bobby pin, it is best to hold it with the raised prong on the top side and slightly open.
METHOD: HOW TO MAKE A HAIR BUN FOR KNOT
Step 1: Make a ponytail
The first step to making a perfect knot bun is putting your hair up into a ponytail or use extension. Brush all the hair towards the center back of the head. Gather the hair into a tight ponytail and secure with an elastic band, ensuring that there are no bumps. To stop frizzy and fly-away hairs, apply a small amount of gel evenly from the roots to the ends of the hair, with your fingers or with the comb. Children with very curly, thick or fine hair may need their hair gelled or sprayed before securing into a ponytail. Brush or gel fringes back off the face and secure with bobby pins if necessary.
Step 2: Twist into a bun
To make the knot bun shape, hold the ponytail at the end and twist it firmly until it is all twisted into a rope. Then coil the ponytail into a flat circle around the hair elastic, continuing the coil in the same direction as the twist in the ponytail. This will stop the ponytail unravelling. Tuck the ends of the ponytail under the bun. Then place 3-4 hairpins around the bun to secure it, without taking your hands off the bun (see instructions for inserting hairpins). Next, place a hairnet over the bun. At this stage, you can make any adjustments to the shape of the bun. A finished knot bun should be round and even in shape, and sit smoothly against the head.
Step 3: How to secure a bun using bobby pins
The final step to creating a perfect knot bun is securing the bun. Hold the pin at the closed end, with the prongs facing the center of the coil. Insert the prongs a little way into the edge of the bun, catching a small amount of the bun edge. Then turn the prongs in and back outwards to catch some of the hair outside the bun. Lastly, turn the prongs inwards again and push into the center of the coil. Insert as many pins as you need to all around the edges of the bun, until it feels secure. Loose hairs can be gelled or sprayed to help them stay put.
Hair buns are timeless. Whether it’s a perfectly messy top knot or an elegant braided up-do, this hairstyle definitely has a magnetic pull and tends to look attractive, regardless of how you choose to wear it.
However, hair buns are often difficult to create with short or medium length. People with hair extensions on the other hand, enjoy complete styling freedom, as the additional length and volume from extensions enables them to try on a number of different styles of buns.
Take a look at our list of some of the best bun hairstyles to try with hair extensions.
1. THE LOW KNOT
This is perhaps the simplest bun hairstyle which you can recreate in minutes. Start off by applying smoothing serum to your hair. Once the serum is evenly spread, tie your hair up in a low ponytail, ideally an inch above the nape of your neck. Next, twist the pony tail into a bun and secure the ends with some bobby pins.
2. THE WET-LOOK CHIGNON
Chignon is one of the most chic hairstyles perfect for both formal and casual events. For a wet-look, start by combing a generous amount of hair gel or glossing spray of your choice. Next, gather your hair at the nape of your neck and tie them in a pony tail. Split the pony tail into two sections and tie them together in a knot. Pin any loose ends underneath the bun and you’re good to go.
3. THE BRAIDED TOP KNOT
This braided bun can be worn to festivals and outdoor parties as it keeps hair away from your face. Prepare your hair with a smoothing serum after which you can tie them in a high ponytail. Next, use the classic three strand method to braid your pony tail. Once the hair is completely braided, wrap it around the elastic to form a high bun. Secure the ends with pins.
4. THE BRAIDED SIDE BUN
This elegant hairstyle is more appropriate for events like weddings or proms. Begin by braiding your hair on the side and continue to braid diagonally until you reach the other end. Once the braid is complete, secure it with elastic and wrap the remaining hair near your ear to form a low side bun.
Hair Weave vs Hair Extensions: What Are the Difference Between Weaves and Extensions?
A weave is a kind of hair extension method where hair wefts are sewn onto braided hair and styled to any wanted style. The beauty of hair weave is a reason it is such a popular technique.
There are numerous types of hair weaves as well as methods to install and style a hair weave. A typical way is to create custom wigs ranging from color, volume, and texture.
First of all, weaves and extensions refer to hair weaves and hair extensions used by women to enhance their crowning glory, that is, their hair.
In general words, a weave is a term which refers to artificial or human hair used to change the appearance of someone’s hair by adding hair to their natural hair. These artificial or human hairs may be added or used to cover the entire hair with a hairpiece.
The advantages of a hair weave are that they help in making the hair longer, add thickness to hair along with volume, and are a boon for women with thinning hair. These are used to add fashionable colors to the hair too without the use of hair colors which have multiple chemicals.
Specifically, a weave refers to a style when someone’s entire hair is braided. Once the braids are made, a needle is used to sew extensions of hair into the braids. The extensions are sewn from one ear to another. This style or weave is an expensive style which may cost up to $500 or even more. The weave last for 6 to 10 weeks. Special shampoos and conditioners are used to maintain them. The advantage of a weave is the length of the hair can be increased, and no chemicals or glues are used. The disadvantage of a weave is if the braids are too tight, they may cause a headache, soreness of the scalp, or permanent loss of hair due to constant stress on the roots of the hair.
Hair extensions refer to artificial or human hair being attached to the natural hair of a person with the help of an adhesive or clip-on or other methods to lengthen the hair. Hair extensions are applied strand by strand to the natural hair. It is a very time-consuming method as around 100-300 extensions are added to one person to make the hair look natural. This application of hair is considered the most expensive due to the labor and time it consumes. There are many methods of adding extensions like using adhesives or copper links.
difference between weave and extensions: The majority of people can’t inform whether there’s a distinction in between the two or not. From our descriptions above the only major distinction in between the two is that all weaves are hair extensions but not all extensions are weaves.
The decision on whether to pick a wig, a weave or a hair extension depends on your preferences and condition. Weaves and hair extensions offer comparable outcomes when it pertains to length, volume, longevity, and sensible appearance. After having weave hair extensions, I then moved over to clip in hair extensions as they are the least damaging for your hair
